ICYMI for October 24

In Case You Missed It

Serious question, newshounds: are you sick of pumpkin spice latte yet? I’m more of a peppermint mocha man myself and I don’t like pumpkin and spice polluting my caffeinated beverage.

He Got Steamed

Have you wondered what would happen if you did bite the hand that feeds you? Well, one developer found out. It seems that when Steam made Paranautical Activity available for sale, they accidentally marked it as an Early Release, frustrating one of the game’s co-creators. He vented on Twitter, ending his rant with a death threat to Gabe Newell. In response, Valve pulled the game. Ouch. The offending tweet has since been deleted and the developer has stepped down, but there’s no word yet if the game will be re-released.

The eSporting Life

Xbox One owners, time to cue up the cheesy 80s montage music, thanks to the eSports League. They’ve just launched a new app across Europe and North America, which allows users to sign up for tournaments, set up one-on-one matches, and stream ESL competitions. This isn’t the first time that a major console manufacturer has catered to eSports fans; Sony launched their own channel on the PS4 last week in Spain.

Stop, Kollaborate, and Listen

Sorry about the Vanilla Ice reference…ahem, Jester King and Live Oak Brewing Co., two of craft breweries from Austin, TX, have joined forces to produce Kollaborationsbiermittschechischemhopfenundwilderbakterienhefekombination and no, I didn’t type all that out. Better known as Kollabrationsbier, the brew is a Czech-style beer featuring wild yeast and bacteria. The beer is available today at Jester King’s taproom, which opens at 4pm CDT. If you’re into delayed gratification, you can meet both the owner and head brewer of Live Oak tomorrow at the taproom.

Nintendo Smash!

Today’s Nintendo Direct was all about one thing: Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. The House That Mario Built pulled no punches this time, announcing over 50 details. I don’t have the space to go over all of them — you’ll have to hit up the link — but players can expect a brand-new Stage Builder, battles with up to 8 players, additional stages, a brand new mode called Smash Tour, the ability to import custom fighters from the 3Ds version of the game, and more.

Don’t Call it a Reboot…

…Gears of War has been here for years, to paraphrase Phil Spencer. He doesn’t feel the franchise needs to start over, but hopes the new game, currently in development at Black Tusk Studios, returns to its dark roots and brings back the feel of the original game. Fans will just have to wait to see if Phil’s dream comes true; a release date hasn’t even been announced yet.

A New Age is Dawning

There. I just dropped a link for the Age of Ultron Teaser…you know, in case you missed it. Go, feast your eyes on it, then feast your eyes on it again. In fact, watch it several times. There’s no shame in that.

For the Kids

We like to have a good time here at Super Barley Bros. headquarters, chewing the fat over games and good beer. But not every one has the luxury of doing that. They’re too busy getting ready for another trip to the hospital, where their child is battling cancer or recovering from a serious injury. The hospitals of the Children’s Miracle Network treats thousands of kids ever year, whether or not their families can pay.

Every year, gamers from all around the world come together for Extra Life, a time when gamers do more than just sit on the couch, they make a difference. Our four Buds in Suds will be streaming on October 25th all day for your enjoyment, but the hope is that you’ll take 5 minutes to make a donation to the Children’s Miracle Network. By doing so, you’ll not only be changing lives, but saving them as well.

To learn more, including on how you can make a safe, tax-deductible donation, visit the link above. And while I won’t be streaming anything, let me just say thank you in advance.
